Civil Litigation - Private

Comment #: CA48159
Rating:1.0
Comments:
The worst, laziest, most clueless, biased judge in Los Angeles County, with the lone exception of Maryann Murphy. Guts plaintiffs' cases at every turn. No objection or argument is too stupid or frivolous for him to sustain if it hurts the plaintiffs. Sleeps throughout trial on the bench in full view of the jury. Might be the laziest judge in the country. Will not work. Ever. Under any circumstances. 100% unfit to serve. An utter embarrassment to the bench. A joke.

Comments:
Starts out minute one trying to get rid of a plaintiff's case, the quicker the better so he can go back to doing nothing. Is nice to defense attorneys bc he thinks they might appeal, and to juries bc they are voters. If you're neither, be sure you have a court reporter and make a record. This judge makes the case for reversed 10 times and you're gone.

Comments:
Avoid at all costs, doesn’t understand current law or recent changes. Horrible rulings. Take a court reporter if you’re stuck here, preserve the record because the only way to get him to rule correctly is under threat of appeal.

Comments:
Arrogant, rude, hard-headed, and obtuse. He’s not a difficult judge that strictly and harshly follows the law, instead he doesn’t understand the law, ignores it, and/or refuses to educate himself on the law. Blatant disregard for applicable case law on evidence and, when he does get it right, fails to apply it evenly. If at all possible stay out of his courtroom. The day he retires or is voted out should be celebrated by those interested in maintaining the integrity of the courts. His presence in a courtroom is a miscarriage of justice.

Civil Litigation - Private

Comment #: CA8726
Rating:1.1
Comments:
A definite 170.6 for plaintiff (or any party who needs a judge who thinks about the law and the evidence instead of himself before ruling). He is filled with unfounded arrogance and self regard, and views the courtroom as a stage on which he is the star. Either he does not read papers and cases at all or, if he does, at the expense of "short breaks" that can last several hours while he retreats to chambers. Makes jokes to jury that distract and are not appreciated, and frequently insults or berates counsel in front of the jury over matters of either no consequence or matters on which he himself is actually quite wrong. Appears to suffer from health issues. Time to retire.

Judge is terrible. Automatic 170.6 for plaintiffs. Simply ignores the law and does what he wants. With no court reporters, he is very dangerous.

Comments:
Refused to take five minutes of testimony on an ex parte matter that would have resolved a jurisdictional issue. Either did not understand the law or was too lazy to read 12 pages of pleadings (which included the App for a TRO, P & A's and Declarations). Incredibly lazy. We still have time for a 170.6.

He is extremely biased, doesn't believe he is required to follow the law and is arrogant. He is an automatic 170.6, as far as I am concerned.

Rating:7.3
Comments:
Generally speaking I'd rather be assigned to his courtroom than any other courtroom in the Southwest District. He has run a general jurisdiction courtroom for many years now and knows what he's doing. He's polite and respectful to counsel. I've won and lost before him, maybe had rulings I didn't agree with, or thought should have gone my way, but that happens in any courtroom.

He requires that you serve your ex parte papers on the opposing party no later than 10:00 a.m. the day prior. Last I checked you only had to give notice by that deadline but this judge requires that you serve your papers by that time as well. Obviously this creates a problem and basically destroys the purpose of ex parte procedure. Section 170.6 was made for judges like this.

Very lazy and will just ignore the law if he's too busy to deal with your motion. Disrespectful, arrogant and unpredictable. Everything you don't want it a judge.

Comments:
A little man in every sense, he easily carries his stature into the court room. Inappropriate remarks from him as if he is doing stand up comedy for his clerk and reporter. They weren't laughing nor were the plaintiff and defendant. Was Napoleon French?

Not the smartest judge out there but he does try and does read paperwork. He tries to be fair and is polite and courteous. He has very limited trial hours which can make trials take a long time. He will not allow an argumentative or leading question, even on cross. Won't admit docs that have not come in via subpoena so be sure to do that before trial. He can be a bit dry, but once in awhile he cracks a joke. He is very nice to jurors.
