This guy is amazing. If you're not in his circle of friends and influence - that is, unless you're from one of the big law firms or make it clear you're Catholic - forget getting a fair hearing with him. He decides nothing on principle or the law; he decides it all personalities and his preferences. Make sure you hire one of his good friends if you want to be successful in the case. Not what a federal judge should be.

Judge Conrad is one of the most biased judges in the very conservative WDNC. Use this to your favor if you are a large corporation, work for a good ole boy local firm or a well connected law firm or if you are the government. He has little mercy in sentencing unless a government lawyer he respects recommends it or he has good a relationsip with the private lawyer representing the defendant. He has little patience. Civil individual plaintiffs have little chance of surviving summary judgment unless again he has a relationship with the lawyer representing the litigant. Try to get known and well respected in his circles. He can be quite fair if he knows or knows of the lawyers on both sides when only large corporations are involved in the litigation.
