Comments:
Being an out-of-county attorney, I was learning how the criminal court worked. I had been on the case for less than a week and had no discovery from the DA. My client was in detox at a rehab facility and not able to appear which the DA had authorized. Judge Steiner didn't care, berated me from the bench and on the following court date as well. He has no manners, professionalism or tact. He is rude and treats women specifically with disrespect which is obvious in his courtroom.

My initial thoughts about Judge Steiner were" "at least he treats everyone like dirt" and, as a criminal defense attorney, I could live with that because he didn't seem to play favorites. Ever since he took over Dpt. N-3 in Fullerton, he has turned a complete 180 as if he just completed orientation with the DA's office. He is far more disrespectful toward defense attorneys in the courtroom and even more disrespectful when addressing defendants directly. While most of his court offers are still a fair compromise to resolve the cases at the bench, his reference point in doing so is based upon the initial ridiculous "offers" from the prosecution. Unfortunately, in that courtroom, there is way to conduct a fair pre-trial conference with a prosecutor because Judge Steiner has no understanding whatsoever that the environment of that courtroom does not lend itself to any meaningful discussion. Therefore, one is relegated to either take the Court offer without any opportunity to provide meaningful mitigating circumstances or move on to a preliminary hearing. In other words, he used to run a better courtroom. Now, he's just another burned out judge... -and we have WAY too many of those as it is.
