I was before Judge Dunn on several cases when he was in trial court in Dept. 26. I appeared before him on a settlement conference (he now presides in MSC Settlements at Spring Street Courthouse). He is a very strong judge. He settled a case we thought was impossible.

I was the plaintiff in a bitter case between condominium owners. Judge Dunn was the settlement conference judge. He said hard cold truths to me which I was not pleased to hear, and I assume he "told it the way he saw it" to the other side; in doing so, he brought sanity to an out-of-control situation. He worked hard (for 7+ hours) and a resolution was reached. My impression is that he is smart, experienced, patient, fair, no-nonsense, has MUCH common-sense, and he works hard. What more can you ask for in a judge?

Judge Dunn was our Judge for our MSC. Judge Dunn took the time to spell out all the issues in the case and make sure he understood all relevant facts and the law. Was very fair in his assessment of the case and was very generous in letting our client state his side of the story.

We settled that case that day, after 8 hours. Very fair, engaged, and competent judge.

Comments:
I was a litigant/defendant in a civil case before Judge Dunn a few years ago. Both sides agreed to let Judge Dunn decide the case in lieu of a trial by jury.

Judd Dunn showed favoritism toward the plaintiff and his witnesses throughout the trial. He limited the witnesses we could call in our defense because his vacation was to start in another week. He also outwardly displayed animosity toward myself and counsel during the trial.

Additionally, Judge Dunn was not familiar with the ethos and mores of the organization involved in the civil suit. This was vital to to make a competent and informed decision. He ultimately decided in favor of the plaintiff.

As a result of his behavior during the trial, I filed a formal complaint with the California Judicial Commission. The Commission refused to investigate my complaint which I now understand is not unusual and necessitates a web site like the "Robing Room".

I would recommend anyone in trial with Judge Dunn to opt for a trial by jury. It is a lesson I learned too late!

I had a two week court trial in front of Judge Dunn that dealt with complex legal issues. Judge Dunn clearly worked hard to familiarize himself with the law and conducted himself with absolute integrity. He is without a doubt one of the finest trial court judges around.

Great judge! Fair, good demeanor, thoughtful, smart, extremely high integrity (in fact that is his best quality!) and, I think one of the best judge's in Central.

Good, strong judge. You could do a lot worse at the Mosk Courthouse.
