Civil Litigation - Private

Please hope you do not get this judge in a civil case if your lawyer fails to show up. He will shame you, which is extremely unprofessional. He looked at my brother-in-law standing in the courtroom, when the plaintiff was not even there and her attorney was only there "by phone," and said "you are not really here." My brother-in-law tried to tell the judge that he had just hired an attorney (who forgot to show up), and the judge demeaned him further, not even acknowledging the fact that his attorney blew it, not my brother-in-law. We are going to request a different judge! I heard that Judge Rhodes used to be a good judge when he was in San Fernando -- what happened? Is he burned out, or does he just hate civil cases?

Excellent judicial temperament. He tries very hard to be fair to both sides - which can be frustrating at times. He will let you try your case. I'd have no hesitation to try either a plaintiff or defense case before him.

If you are a defendant in a medical malpractice case, he is your judge. He will allow defendants to stonewall plaintiffs with discovery to the point that you wonder if he ever read the intent of the Discovery Act. He will not give plaintiff's lawyers sanctions even after making findings that the defense's conduct made the motion to compel necessary. If you are a plaintiff's lawyer, you definitely do not want a court trial in front of him.

Criminal Defense Lawyer

Comment #: CA142
This judge ordered the defense attorney to turn over all clients' statements made to his attorney over to prosecution before trial.
