Civil Litigation - Private

Comment #: CA53338
Rating:2.1
Comments:
[Redacted by Ed.] He has twice continued a hearing on an Opposition when the underlying Motion was never served. This has been pointed out to him twice, but it appears that he wants the Opposition heard so that he can award sanctions to Defendant's counsel.

Rating:9.0
Comments:
Judge Hoffer is extremely patient and treats those who appear in his courtroom with respect. He also allows the parties a lot of input as to how their cases are managed. Excellent judge.

favors defendants regardless of case evidence

Litigant

Comment #: CA39723
Rating:10.0
Comments:
Excellent!! I was self-represented and defending myself against a wildly exaggerated claim by Plaintiff. On the day set for trial, the Judge made us come back for a settlement conference before beginning the trial and strongly encouraged both Plaintiff and me to resolve the matter. He was intelligent, insightful, compassionate and knowledgeable about the facts of the case. We were able to settle the matter and avoid trial.

Civil Litigation - Private

Comment #: CA39238
Rating:10.0
Comments:
Judge Hoffer is thoughtful and always prepared. His rulings are fair and well-reasoned. He is more academic/intellectual than most judges in the superior court. I represented plaintiffs in a civil case and I disagree with the comments that he is biased in favor of the defense. He was extremely even-handed and my clients (plaintiffs) obtained a good result. I wish all the judges in the Orange County Superior Court were as good as Judge Hoffer.

Comments:
Judge Hoffer shows signs of impairment. The evidence you present is ignored. His hands shake and he can’t focus. He should humble himself and go to rehab!

Civil Litigation - Private

Comment #: CA31359
Rating:10.0
Comments:
In 35 years of practice one of the best judges I have ever appeared before. Thoughtful, prepared and courteous. We waived jury and he allowed the case to be fully presented by both sides. He has a patient demeanor and was respectful to all sides during calendar and law and motion.

Comments:
After a review of several tentative rulings on Trellis.law, it is clear - there seems to be a strong defense bias. Review of 15 rulings on discovery show plaintiffs always seem to have asked to vague or broad of questions - further on substantive matters rulings he invites and gives advise to defense attorneys on how to file more motions against plaintiffs. 35 years of practice I have not observed such bias. The people of this state need a referee not an advocate.

Always about 45 minutes late for court but has you come in early. Never prepared, and most of the time does not even know what your case is about and doesn't appear to have read anything but has opinions. Loves female lawyers, especially blondes, and it's embarrassing to watch his eyes as the females walk out of the courtroom.
