Some judges are widely respected, and lawyers selfishly hope they will never be elevated, so they stay at the trial level. Others leave you wondering how on earth, he or she is allowed to remain on the bench. This judge, I am sorry to say, is in the latter category, no matter how well prepared you are. In my opinion, unprepared, does not care, lacks a judicial temprament. There are many excellent judges in OC, but not this one.

I understand that he may be impatient and does not coddle the unprepared. However, I think he does try to be fair and is certainly smart. I endorse the comment that he not one for the unprepared. If you are prepared and act with decorum, you will do as fine with him ad any other judge. I only downgrade him because he can be impatient at times.

This won't come as a surprise to any of the posters here... Hunt just had his arse handed to him this morning by the Commission on Judicial Performance, for exhibiting judicial bias in four separate cases.

He was on the appellate division panel for the July calendar. All of the July hearings had to be continued to September. I'm not sure if I should be upset at the delay or thrilled that he won't be on the panel.

Sorry to say all the negative comments about Judge Hunt are almost certainly well earned by him. We recently tried a short trial to him and his ruling, and reswponse to a motion for new trial, cause genuine concern that he may not be mentally competent to discharge his judicial responsibilities. Sad, and dangerous for litigants in his court.

Judge Hunt is THE worst, bar none. All of the other negative reviews say it all. The other judges hate him too, by the way, so if I somehow forgot to timely file a ding, I would bring a motion to DQ him under CCP 170.1(6)(b).

I have been papering judge Hunt since after the first time I drew him in October 2000. There was a spirited discussion on the OC Bar Masters list where an unfortunate practitioner drew him and asked the list what they thought. The opinions of about 15 practitioners who offered their opinions were almost unanimously negative, and mirrored my bad experience with Judge Hunt. It is a mystery to me and most others in this profession that, after over 20 years of judicial malpractice, this person remains on the bench.

The WORST judge I've ever seen. He commented on points not being made in our motion. Once he was pointed to where the points were raised, he simply stated he didn't see that portion. It was clear he didn't even read the papers. Then he made a ruling that didn't conform to the law, and id zero analysis of what was presented.
170.6 him out of existence please. This guy doesn't deserve to be on the bench. It is obvious he hates his job, and he should be disrobed, immediately.

One of the rudest and most biased judges I've ever been in front of. I'm surprised he is still around. In one case where my government entity client was sued for breach of contract by a corporation, and attempted to appear without a lawyer, he actually said, "the reason they can't afford a lawyer is because your client didn't pay them."

But other than that, he's still rude, refuses to give his reasoning behind his rulings, and yells at lawyers for doing things like getting a pen out of their pockets or looking at the clock.

Opposing Counsel's wife diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. He and his wife have a six year old and a six month old.
Judge Hunt denied stipulated Ex Parte to continue trial and questioned Counsel on whether he was a daily care giver for his wife.
This behavior lacks simple human decency let alone a modicum of judicial temperament.
If we don't have the power to remove him from the position he clearly does not deserve, we can at least let him preside over an empty courtroom.

Not only will this increase her insurance but she will also lose her job as transports autistic people. Ok, I am probably the only attorney who likes this judge. Most attorneys dislike him because he takes no BS. He starts off the trial asking defense counsel to explain each and every affirmative defense. Not prepared, you lose. The key is to let opposing counsel argue with him and he will eat them up. LOL The last case I had with him, he took 3 months to decide but came out with a 50/50 ruling on a title issue that was right. He said it was a difficult case but took the time to come to the right decision.

If you have a crappy case, avoid him Good case, be prepared.

It's funny, the comments posted on this site about Judge Hunt are so true. I was trying to explain this judge to others, but lacked the adjectives to begin to describe the horrendous manner in which Judge Hunt handled this case.

H did not listen to either party, and he was rude and generally showed a lack of respect to both litigants.

In short, this man clearly should not be a judge.

It's scary knowing that our legal system allows a so-called neutral arbitrator to settle cases in this manner.

While I understand the question and answer method of helping sort thru the case, sometimes a judge should listen to each party's arguments.

Very disappointed in this judge.

Worked incredibly hard not to learn the case. The comment re he only asks questions and wants no information about the case is spot on. He has managed to devise a system to insure a combination of injustice and minimal judicial effort.

He clearly did not read the briefs yet told us he did. And when questioned re same went on to emphasized why the case before him was so unimportant and did not warrant his attention. An unreal comment from the bench in front of the clients.

I will never see him again pursuant to CCP 170.6.

He may be the worst judge I have encountered in decades of practice and five thousand court appearances, and in my matter with him my client was successful on all counts yet I am compelled to warn against him. He is arrogant and abusive and enamored with his pseudo brilliance which is apparent only to himself. He will take over the case, develop or create immaterial facts, spin them to create a version of the case separate from reality, and then fashion an insipid ruling to apply to his faulty understanding. The lawyers will have little or no involvement as the case is hijacked and efforts to correct his substantial errors will not be well received. A tragedy is that his methodology takes much longer to develop than had he read the pleadings, which in my matter he clearly had not. I would not appear before him again unless I had a bail bondsman at the ready or felt my client's position was so lacking in merit that the client had no chance of success in any other court, so why not take a chance on an alternate reality. Do not appear before him unless there is a court reporter. He is a disaster or horrible injustice waiting to occur. Paper him. Have your hands in your pockets as you do.

Judge Hunt does not apply the law to the facts. He is extremely biased and decides who he wants to prevail. He favors Mormons, disfavors Asians, and generally dislikes plaintiffs. In Machiavellian fashion, he plots and plans the manner in which he can accomplish his objective. Litigants that deserve to lose, win. And litigants that deserve to win, lose. He feels slighted for not having been elevated to the court of appeal. To compensate, he has his clerk call counsel to waive oral argument so he can avoid oral argument to prepare orders to accomplish his predetermined results. It is travesty that the judicial system has permitted Judge Hunt to continue presiding over important civil matters. He should be assigned to small claims court where he can pick the winners and losers without regard for the law.

I wanted to say, "You made me drive here to OC because you won't do Court Call, then you kept me here all morning waiting, then you say go back to the office [in L.A.] and earn money?" I hate this guy and I purposely searched him by the search term 'hands in pocket judge,' just so that I could make these spiteful comments about him. Judge Hunt is very difficult personally. I tried a two-and-a-half-week jury trial in his courtroom, and it was a very difficult trial. My plaintiff opponent was a flamboyant trial lawyer, with a wealthy client, and they spent almost $1 million in attorneys' fees going after my client. I wanted Judge Hunt on the case because he did a good job of handling the plaintiff's counsel. Nevertheless, it was a very painful trial with many irrational rulings. Just like all the other reviewers have noted, Judge Hunt is an arrogant jerk. If you have two reasonable parties attempting to litigate a case, this is not the courtroom where you want to do it.

However, in our latest case before him, we were the reasonable party and we were going up an incredibly arrogant defendant (even more so than the judge). If there's one thing Judge Hunt absolutely won't tolerate, it's a litigant who is more arrogant than he is.

Our opponent in a clear breach of contract case (who obviously owed the debt) was trying to stir up doubt before the judge. Hunt was having none of it. After our opponent was slapped down by Judge Hunt for his arrogance in a couple of pre-trial hearings, the defendant agreed to settle with us for the entire amount of principal owed.

So if you have a case against an entirely unreasonable, arrogant opponent, keep it in Hunt's courtroom. Otherwise, paper him and get out.
