I was a prospective juror in Judge Hawkins' courtroom. He was polite and fair both with the prospective jurors as well as with both the defense and prosecution. He went out of his way to explain the whole process to the members of the jury pool. I have never had anything to do with the legal profession but found Judge Hawkins to be a fair and decent man. I note that the previous commenters who lambaste him are all criminal defense attorneys who probably lost their cases in his courtroom. Further, it's ironic that one of them claims that Judge Hawkins holds a grudge, when it's so clear that these attorneys are holding their own grudges. Their vindictive comments are so much sour grapes.

This judge is both thorough and thoughtful. I was a prospective juror, and the case before us was a criminal one that included the death penalty. He explained -- thoroughly -- the different aspects of the case and the responsibilities of those participating in the trial. He was willing to consider hardships that the jurors might have, especially in these difficult financial times in which we are now living. I appreciated his demeanor, as well as the thoughtful way in which he conducted himself.

Ex-LAPD police officer and DA. Goes out of his way to rule in favor of the DA. Is very mean-spirited and holds a grudge.

Biased, unscholarly, and lazy. More interested in courthouse gossip than the case at bar - unless the case at bar presents facts which afford him an opportunity to attempt humor to a captive audience of attorneys, clerks, and court reporters. Judge Hawkins often comes across as bored and angry. He amuses himself by compiling files on all of the cases and attorneys who appear before him. These files include drawings and anecdotes about the attorneys and defendants. I would prefer he read the briefs instead.

Irascible, uneven, defaults in direction of government
