Comments:
I practiced law with Judge Hopp at Quinn Emanuel prior to his appointment to the bench. I was an associate that worked directly under him on several cases including a civil trial. I found him smart, even tempered, hard working and a nice guy. He was very pleasant to work with. I have no doubt that he is a very good judge.

Comments:
I thought him to be a very fair and honest judge, who seemed genuinely invested in making legally correct and equitable rulings. I'm an O.C. lawyer, and I was representing the plaintiff in a case against a local hospital and physician, with all defendants represented by local counsel. The case had some very complex discovery issues that had to be resolved, and he was very thorough in his approach and analysis. I thought that he did an excellent job.

I cannot speak to the experience of the poster who felt that he was "home-towned," and I should note that my experience was a few years ago, so perhaps things are different now. I can, however, say that such was definitely not my experience with Judge Hopp. I never detected a hint of favoritism or bias -- and I was actively looking for it, given the venue's reputation.

Comments:
Judge Hopp is a hometown judge, who favors local Indio-area attorneys (even if they are incompetent and/or unethical). If you are an attorney from outside his hometown, you will have a very difficult time in his courtroom. He is unfair, dishohnest and shameless in his favoritism. Judges like Hopp will perpetuate Indio Superior Court's deserved reputation as a legal backwater.
