Criminal Defense Lawyer

I've been practicing law for more than 20 years, and this is one of the best judges ever. I had a hotly contested criminal trial that lasted nearly two weeks. He gave me complete leeway to cross examine, ad I took advantage of it. When the "victim" began crying and pouting, he didn't stop and hand her Kleenex, and take a long break. He let me go. I think he knew how it was going, that my client was innocent, and he was't going to interfere in justice.

His tentative rulings fail to address the strongest opposing arguments when granting or denying relief. He misses key details in moving papers. Does not enforce written discovery; you had better take excellent depositions because you will not get relief if the other side plays discovery games. Will not award fees and will not explain his reasoning. If you ask to be heard, he will tell you "no." Reading the other comments, I have to wonder if something has changed recently because I did not see any of the positive traits described.

One of the best judges on the bench on the civil side.

He is a model judge in every way. He is smart, fair, honest, a gentleman, and patient, and he cares about justice. His even keel and courtly manner never fail him. He can disagree with counsel without putting people down, being condescending, or being rude. This judge is the epitome of what a civil judge ought to be. He can handle the most complex and demanding of matters. He has ruled both for and against me on various things. He has both a big brain and a big heart.

I had Judge Pressman in an extremely contentious business dispute in which the parties appeared in his courtroom at least once a month on voluminous discovery and other law and motion issues. He was always highly prepared, with a strong grasp of the facts and issues before him. He was punctual, professional, respectful of counsel and fair in his rulings. In my 22 years of practice he's one of the best judges I've been before.

You don't get any better a judge than Joel Pressman. Just don't present him with a frivolous case or argument. He's nobody's fool. Be prepared for a professional experience.

He handled a mandatory settlement conference and later enforcement of settlement agreement in a civil case I was involved in. Personable, intelligent, even-handed. he understood the case at first glance, asked the right questions during settlement negotiations, and got the case settled.

He would be my first pick as judge in a serious felony matter anywhere in San Diego. He is patient, respectful, and intelligent. He is fair to both sides. His staff is responsible. He is just a decent person. I've heard from civil lawyers that he is admired, as well.
