She knew more than the White Man, and did some decent, good, just things not just by the book but considered and decent. But if you beat somebody down, too wrong, you were going to get "hooked up" high bail, and if that what you got you had it coming

Now retired the bench is poorer for it. She was painstaking, used discretion when she saw fit, but despised cruelty and violence. She is a good person and a good judge and had a heart-- where it belonged, but not if you didn't. She knew justice, is Justitia, a Roman goddess not a slogan but a considered compassionate and sometimes dispassionate fairness. None of us want what "we deserve".
