Violates many long-established tenants of settlement 101. For instance, before hearing from both sides, told one side that they had a very strong position. Of course, that just made them dig in more and greatly hindered progress. Maybe he knew the lawyer?
By the time we got to him for settlement conference, there had been hours spent in evidentiary hearings on several technical matters. Nevertheless, Goldberg felt that he could disagree with the trial judge based on what Goldberg had read in the opposing party's settlement conference brief. Also, very one dimensional when it came to settlement techniques. Hard to believe, but true that he was unfamiliar with basic methods to close the gap between the parties. Not a waste of time, but be prepared to 1) drive the talks, and 2) try to prevent him from addressing he parties from the bench before the settlement talks. I've heard him say things that just aren't conducive to enhancing the parties' flexibility for settlement.

I agree with all the negative comments about judge Goldberg . I am still fighting custody after 8 years because of him and was denied access because of his harsh and unjust rulings. Many parents were hurt by this judge. Many children suffered because of this judge .

Ever since he lost " an open and shut case” with the OJ trail as a prosecutor and now as a judge nothing have changed. This guy is a light weight - big time looser. He is also a low energy person. He does not follow the rules. I went to the court room to observe his manner a day before my trail and he was drilling someone for showing up late. the next morning, he was an hour and half late himself! his hand writing is illegible, he fails to look at facts instead he swims in an ocean of assumption. if you are going for a mandatory settlement conference in a divorce case, don’t waste your time, if you know there will be no settlement or agreement with the other party.

Did a great job. AS he said a good settlement is where everyone is a bit unhappy

After one of the more complex cases I worked on languished in the LA courts for more than four years, floating from Judge to Judge, while our adversaries got away with murder on discovery abuses because the LA Judges were either too overwhelmed or simply too lazy to make a decisive ruling on anything, I am grateful that the case finally found its way to Judge Goldberg. His extremely conscientious, detail oriented approach, and willingness to work through and understand legal complexities and voluminous record in order to reach the right result restores a measure of confidence in our justice system. There are still a few shining lights on the bench.

I have had the pleasure of having Judge Goldberg preside over criminal matters when assigned to the Criminal Courts Building, downtown LA, as well as family law matters in his present assignment. He is fantastic across the board, and has a sly sense of humor that puts litigants at ease. As a settlement judge, his current assignment in family law, Judge Goldberg excels. Even when I disagree with him, his logic is impeccable. Smart!

This judge is not particularly helpful in settlement negotiations.

This judge made decisions based on the lies of my ex-wife, who said that I hated Jews, just because I am Palestinian. My children are about to go to India on false reports from Bruce Harshman, who was appointed by Judge Hank Goldberg. Judge Goldberg is not just and not fair to do this to a parent just because of his race and religion.
