This guy has still not been removed from the bench? Read the Daily Journal article on him: "Judge accused of insensitive questioning..." He was reprimanded and ordered to be retrained on his interactions with litigants. What judge in the history of Los Angeles County Courts has had to literally be retrained? He is unabashedly biased and chooses a side at the commencement of litigation, [redacted by Ed.] he discriminates against parties with any disability or differences and even denies the most basic ADA requests that every other judge always grants such that the Superior Courts' Court Counsel dept. had to warn him to stop his actions. The epitome of a bad judge that needs to be taken off the bench. A 170 motion is the only choice.

He was horrible judge! Totally biased prick!! He denied my ex parte continuance but was so quick to allow defense’s counsel’s 36 day late notice. Shameful that you get paid by taxpayers money.

He is horrifically bad. His staff is incompetent -- the whol 9redacted] e department is a nightmare. I had two motions scheduled for hearing on the same day. At the hearing he said he was ready to hear the "motion." So I reminded him that I had two motions scheduled and on the docket that day -- they were even both listed on lacourtconnect in order to sign up for remote. He repeatedly argued that there was only one motion -- like he had lost his mind. How do you tell an argumentative judge that he is literally wrong? So he just skipped my 2nd motion as if it did not exist, saying he was only ruling on one. Later that afternoon, he had secretly continued the 2nd motion apparently after he FINALLY realized he was wrong and that his staff was incompetent. So my 2nd hearing was continued without input by the parties, who each have other trials/hearings on that day. You will scratch your head, then want to pull your hair out with this guy. Total abominable failure.

You know the judges that start their calendar at 8:30am? Then there are the ones that, at least, always start on time at 9am? Well this guy starts at 9:45am if you are lucky. And he hears a few cases then calls a recess, leaving you waiting.even.longer. Words can hardly capture the staggering incompetence here -- just despicably wrong yet blames you. Literally nothing about this guy even resembles a judge - horrible disposition as he has manic-depressive wild mood swings, chronically late to start his calendar, ex partes are always in chambers so forget about any fairness there, most of his rulings amount to "denied" without any findings -- and as a pro per I have won 10 cases against the other party and his attorneys but suspiciously this "judge" has literally denied everything here -- every motion, every request, everything. The other party has had multiple untimely filings, defective service, violations of sealing, violations of court orders, violations of meet and confers in multiple code sections -- yet this "judge" gives him a free ride. If the word "worst" could be increased by an exponent of 10, it would still not even come close to this utterly failed individual wrongly on the bench. And I see it at every morning calendar whenever I have a hearing scheduled -- whether pro pers or counsel, he picks a favorite in every case and will not waiver -- bending over backwards with absurdly biased statements and rulings that even prevailing parties have questioned. He must be getting ready to retire because he really does not give two cents about what he does, the harm he inflicts, his errors of law, and the huge number of appeals against this guy. Do yourself a favor and take a deep breath then do a peremptory challenge.

Did a little bit of searching wanting to know why this judge is so mean. Apparently his wife divorced him in 2005. He is so bitter against the world. Poor soul. Maybe some psychotherapy would help. He is so very mean and heartless. Have some empathy.

Disgusting human. One of the litigants had Covid and could barely walk. The judge wanted to know why they were not in court!! What a sicko. He should be reprimanded "again" by the Judicial Performance Committee. He seems just to want to collect a paycheck. Pure evil. 170.6. immediately without question.

THE.WORST. He defies other judges' orders so you are constantly reinventing the wheel. Ignorant of even common statutes. Picks a side and never waivers. Cartoonishly biased. No wonder his motion schedule is wide open -- everyone runs to other departments and avoids this hack like the plague. He even defies orders of the judge in the department immediately next to him -- so presumably he does not even get along with other judges. Something out of kilter with this one; junior lawyers with zero experience could do a MUCH better job. But worse, his incompetence is matched by his bias. A total clown show, avoid at all costs. You will come to hate your own case when you have to deal with this guy. Instantly 170.6 him. Save yourself agony of continuously biased and just plan erroneous decisions, then avalanche of reconsiderations, moving to dismiss / vacate, appeals, etc. He refused to even set a trial date during the CMC -- inexplicably continued CMC for another half year, so get ready for your case to drag endlessly. Vicious temper. That affable smile plastered on his face instantly snaps into backstabbing and yelling - anger management issues. Do not both bringing a court reporter -- he tells the reporter to stop reporting when he does not like what you say, then tells reporter to restart reporting for your opponent. Literally obstructs your record for appeal. He parrots your opponents ludicrous, meritless argument and completely ignores yours that is backed by solid statutes and multiple appellate decisions - total waste of time in there -- assume you will have to appeal everything. We had already used our 170.6 when we filed the case, so when it was randomly reassigned into this dept. due to case overload, we found ourselves in litigation hell. We have literally won every case against this opponent -- nearly a dozen cases in various courts, but in here, every motion is ruled against us. He does not even feign fairness. He will strike your 170.1 motions then retaliate even worse. Nightmarish. Stay away at all costs. You're welcome.

If you file a 170, he proceeds to make rulings anyways after it is filed. Total violation, and totally typical of this buffoon. Praying for his retirement, a momentary lucid moment from him in which he correctly recuses himself, or some act of God to rid a case of a judicial leach like this. Once he is on the case, even though he is a witness to the incident, he won't remove himself or let himself be disqualified. An incompetent, sociopath, and insult to the judiciary. Judges come and go; a case result is forever -- run away from this epic failure on the bench.

Worst judge. He goes into CMC not only without having read the CMC statements, but alleging a party never filed one -- then he finds the statement. He continues the CMC for five more months without any explanation and without a trial date. So unless you want a huge needless delay in getting to trial, do a 170 on this horrible judge. Further, he blatantly advocates for one side -- literally acting as private attorney for defendant in this case -- telling his counsel what to do and when to do it. This judge is ignorant -- had no clue that one motion was filed before another and would render the second one moot -- he advocated for the second motion to be heard first. He also heard a MSC on this case, then refused to recuse himself as trial judge. He has a frightening trigger temper -- one minute fake-smiling and the next blowing up. He lost all courtesy copies -- so don't waste your time or money on that. Shocking that this guy is on any bench. [redacted by Ed.] He disregards the statutes, necessitating multiple additional motions for literally no reason. His staff is horrible as well. An assistant that rarely answers the phone, and then hangs up on you, refusing to let you talk to the clerk, or leave a message, or even know a time to call back. This case now has a Stay from a US Court, yet this judge is just hearing right through the mandatory Stay. Yes, an absolute nightmare to litigate with this [redacted by Ed.] judge.

The most hypocritical buffoon ever to wear the robe, he will walk in two hours late if he shows up at all, and then disregard your pleadings penalize your client because you’re pleadings was one day late if punctuality means anything then it should mean something across-the-board. How can such ridiculous and legally incorrect can his rulings And analysis be? Prepare to be shocked and appalled. We will go through lengthy arguments over several days, the court will take the matter under submission and then issue a final ruling that is totally irrelevant and ignores the argument brought up by both parties as if he wrote it or copied it from the same type of hearing months prior. As far as understanding of the law and the legislative intent, you could forget about it. Sometimes he’s in a good mood and will only mess up your case a little bit or he’ll be in a bad mood and ruin your client and the case Without any sort of regard for anybody. He’s disrespectful to everyone abrasive and simply has no etiquette or manners to speak of. If you have a case in his court I will pick up the phone and call the other side and by mutual stipulations agree to flip a coin. Because no matter what happens we will lose in his court everyone will leave with a sense of disgust And contempt For the failure this man is as a judge. My entire washroom as well as two other firms in my building have a standing policy to automatically 170.6 this nightmare

My daughter is transgender and when we appeared before Judge Moreton to get an amended birth certificate for her, he was disrespectful and dismissive. He questioned her repeatedly and insulted her appearance. It was extremely offensive and unacceptable. Judge Moreton clearly displayed his bias against transgender people in a very unprofessional manner.

I have tried in excess of 100 cases and therefore am familiar with the bench officers in Los Angeles. I have been before Judge Moreton on two matters. The first involved a motion to enforce a verdict. While he appeared to want to grant the motion he acknowledged a recent appellate decision that precluded him from doing so. Simply put, he did not let his desire get in the way of the law.
The second matter was a three day bench trial, which probably should have been completed in a single day. Despite the laborious presentation that would have caused most Judges to scream, Judge Moreton was an absolute gentleman throughout. He has a great demeanor and appeared to have reviewed the briefs and applicable law before all rulings.

This judge abuses his power to the extreme every chance he gets. He should be expelled from the bench and publicly reprimanded. Today he denied a mandatory relief under the law, and gave me no opportunity to argue. That's right. Immediately after I said the first sentence "the court has no discretion to deny relief" he responded "tentative is adopted as final" even though the tentative ruling clearly violated black letter law. He knew it's not economically feasible for my client to writ or appeal such a small ruling. What a terrible person to sit on the bench making important decisions about people's lives!

By far the worst judge I have ever come across in my 24 years of practice in Los Angeles Superior Courts. A true imbecile whose bigotry pours from him no matter how he tries to hide it, an imbecile and a sad man. What a disgrace to the bench, he makes decisions that are based on is pathetic mood instead of the facts, even when the operable facts are staring him right in the face.

This judge showed little knowledge in law and an inability to educate himself. He made patently wrong rulings on the law, chose to not avoid addressing strong and/or conclusive legal authorities against his ruling when questioned, and awarded sanctions that are completely unjustifiable. I will not be surprised if his rulings are based on which side he likes, i.e. party or attorney of the "right" race, gender, last names etc.

One of the better judges. He has a good disposition & treats people ok & seems fair minded. He reads your papers but keep it straight forward and not lengthy or esoteric. He seems like he doesn't change his tentative too much even after taking under submission. Excellent courtroom staff.

I have been in front of Judge Moreton a handful of times. He handles an odd array of matters and seems to know the law in the areas he handles. His disposition is generally quite pleasant although he can be curt and lose patience at times. I don't believe he always get it right (but no judge does). But he will let you make your arguments and listen, which is more than you can say about a lot of judges.

This judge is not fair. He makes up his mind and does not listen. So much for a fair hearing. He does not have the temperament to be a judge. He does not even care if his decision can leave a person unable to pay their bills and homeless, while he sits on his throne, looking down at the people in his court. God bless you if you have to appear in his court.
