He was cruel to jurors, too. He fined a pregnant person who couldn't sit on the hard benches, even though she was a SECOND alternate and the case was already for deliberation, and this juror was not needed. At least the person didn't have to serve jury duty for a little over 10 years. The head judge said to file a complaint and it was going to be collected against him. I think it worked!

I loved appearing before Judge Sohigian, except when he almost made me cry. But even then, he read my papers, he understood them, he was completely even handed 100% of the time, and yes, the smartest man in the Courthouse. You want cuddling? Hire a hooker. His retirement is a terrible loss to the Bench.

What a relief he is gone !! He favored his friends and not the issues or the legal skills. He abused his robe and the public trust. After driving two hours in morning traffic to get to court he thought nothing about saying "come back at 1:30." I have never experienced anything like that in any other court room. It was time for him to go -- years ago.

I know that Judge Sohigian has just retired and also been public admonished for the second time. Still, he was an astute, erudite, and hardworking judge who resolved your issues on the merits. Judge Sohigian read every line of every pleading you submitted, and gave you a reasoned ruling. Not all of them are like that.

Yes, he demanded preparedness and civility. He also put lawyers appearing in front of him for the first time through his own crucible. But if you met his standards, he had the utmost respect for you.

I'm sorry to see him go. Even in his advanced age, he was still more competent as a bench officer than many sitting there now.

His retirement reminds me of the death of Pol Pot, the Cambodian revolutionary responsible for the one of the worst genocides of the 20th century, who died peacefully in his sleep. It just doesn't seem fair that a man who has disrupted so many lives steps down only because of father time and no other reason.

Maybe he'll burn in Hell or something. He deserves it. The JPC should burn with him for allowing him to stay on the bench.

The best decision that Judge Sohigian ever made was recognizing that he is no longer able to serve as judge. The last time I appeared before him, he read the wrong tentative for about five minutes in open court. Counsel was so scared to say anything that he continued reading the wrong case and brow beating counsel until a lawyer on that case spoke up from the gallery that the court was discussing his case.
In Judge Sohigian's defense, I would say that he was unfair and nasty to everyone. We will long remember Judge Sohigian as the judge you got stuck with when you 170.6 someone almost as bad.

This judge is rude, condescending, passive-aggressive, arbitrary, and lazy. Judge Sohigian mistakes his paternalistic sense of knowing what is best for everyone for the proper application of the law.

My very first hearing as an attorney was in front of him. He asked for my argument, and when I presented it, he told me he didn't want to hear it and that I should go complain somewhere else. Then he ruled in my favor. Very strange experience.

His Royal Highness King Sohigian is extremely mean and rude and rules his department with an iron fist. It's a shame our tax dollars are supporting this man. He has completely lost sight of the fact that he works for us. Avoid him like the plague -- otherwise he may make you go stand in the corner.

Judge Sohigian, bless his heart, is one of the few judges I have appeared before in 27 years who actually understands and follows the evidence code. Very refreshing.

This judge is mean, rude, and has an imperialistic attitude. He likes to scold attorneys like children. I will say one thing positive about him, however: he doesn't pick sides. He is mean to everyone equally. When appearing before him, talk as little as possible and then sit down. He will zero in on the attorney that talks the most and start trashing them instead of you.

He intentionally and actively interrupts so that attorneys cannot make a record. He gets annoyed when an attorney simply tries to explain a position that he (sohigian) hasn't grasped. I was in his courtroom recently and after he complained about his huge caseload because of budget cuts, he went into a rambling 25 minute monologue about himself as 4 billing attorneys stood (he didn't mention they could sit) looked on speechless. He has no business being on the bench.

He's abrupt and sarcastic. But he's fair and smart. If you're prepared--really prepared--you can survive Judge Sohigian, but you'll need a thick skin.

This judge is very evenhanded in how badly he treats everyone. He is a petty tyrant in his courtroom, and loves his job. He has literally driven lawyers to tears. Don't sent to his courtroom a young associate just out of law school, or he won't come back; he'll end up driving around the country on a motorcycle trying to figure out what he really wants to do with his life. Send an experienced grayhair who knows better than to give a crap what this judge says.

Smart enough guy and NEVER hesitates to let you know how how smart he thinks he is. As ill tempered as they get. Rude, abusive, a complete tyrant. Hasn't changed in decades. A complete horse's rear. Bitter and nasty. The male counterpart to Ruth Kwan.

After litigating for 35 years I can't believe that he hasn't been chastised more severly by the Commission. He treats everyone like rude children. He obviously has psych issues that spill into his courtroom. I invite the press to sit there for just a day--his career would be over and we lawyers would stop the automatic 170.6 filings.

The problem with this Judge is that he is mean spirited and insulting even to well prepared lawyers. He routinely called our offices demanding us to be in court the same afternoon to start our trial and then left us sitting there and never called us. This happened three times. No apologies -- no effort to rectify his lack of judical temperment. Terribly expensive for the client and for no purpose. It was a two hour drive at traffic hour to get there or get back. My sense is that he will be on the bench and feeding at the public trough forever. Under no circumstances would he survive in private judging. We are stuck with him in the legal community. Run -- do not walk to file a 170.6 on this judge

I agree with #1581. The guy is smart, but what's with the TRYING to find something to sanction the attorneys that appear before him for.
The last time I appeared before him, it was a standard CMC. I knew the substantive facts and the law. That didn't stop him from setting and OSC re Sanctions against me for not being able to recall the EXACT date of an unimportant filing that occurred weeks earlier. Maybe the worst court experience I've had and it was the last time I will voluntarily appear before him.

In the one case I had before Judge Sohigian he ruled in my favor on a dispositive motion. He got the law right, understood the issues, asked the right questions and made the correct decision. That said, it was an awful experience. He is gratuitously unpleasant and hostile. To his credit, he appears to be even-handedly horrible to everyone. Yes, he is a smart man. Yes, his ruling (in my case) was well thought out. But why treat everyone insultingly? Only after spending pointless time grilling everyone on minutiae does he get started. My opposing counsel had losing facts, but was a nice person and a competent attorney. He was absolutely raked through over the coals for what was basically standard advocacy. Run, don't walk away from this judge.

Judge Sohigian has gotten "a bum rap" for many years. I have had two cases before him, one of which proceeded through a bench trial that lasted a full week. I have always found him to be quite fair and respectful to counsel and to the parties. He is, without a doubt, one of the most intelligent judges in the Los Angeles Superior Court. In his courtroom, you are expected to KNOW AND FOLLOW THE RULES, which is NOT an unreasonable requirement. If you are well prepared, and have complied with the appropriate rules in a timely way, you simply could not ask for a better, more intelligent judge in the Los Angeles Superior Court.

Despite hearing a lot of negative things about Judge Sohigian, I think he is one of the very best judges in Central. He is smart, and totally diligent. He not only reads, he understands and gets into the smallest details of the cases. I think he really cares about the law, and he doesn't have an axe to grind on either side. Just be prepared, as all lawyers should be, and you will love him if the law is on your side. He's an intellectual judge and responds to intellectual arguments.
