This judge used to be fair, but over time has grown biased against tenants (and especially pro-pers) and will look for chances to rule against them. He has also acknowledged being a landlord himself.

He is fine with following the law if its clear, with the occasional wrong ruling, but he will almost always rule on equitable matters against tenants. I think he would be a great judge somewhere else but he needs to get out of UD court.

He has a pretty good temperament, but sometimes can be short with pro-per tenants. Agree with the other comment on here that he extends courtesies to landlord attorneys that he will not extend to tenants or their attorneys.

He is also always at least 30 minutes late.

This is one of the smartest judges in Stanley Mosk UD Court. He actually appears to follow the law, however He is very Pro Landlord. I've seen him extremely biased towards tenants even when they follow the law. I've seen him deny request of special needs pro per for Mandatory Settlement Conferences. Ive seen him proove up cases against Pro Per litigants who are not at court or running late, But wait for or have his Bailiff go get an Attorney from a law firm, representing the landlord, who is not in the court room when individual cases are called. He will even put these cases on second call or reschedule them on behalf of the landlord/Oposing Counsel. I have seen him ignore sanction request for Pro Per tenants defendants who propound discovery, or who come to Mandatory Settlement Conferences and Plaintiffs don't show up. On the other hand. He will award sanction request from Plaintiff counsel against inexperience pro per defendants and Defendant Attorneys who step into cases after the alleged sanctionable action.
Even though some of the outreach tenant firms are nuisance of the court, I've noticed this judge will verbally chastise ProPer Defendants for having binders that do not exactly follow the 5th Amendment Standing Order, but will not chastise or threatened to exclude evidence of a Trained Educated Attorney for the Plaintiff for not having a binder at all. If you speak to him in the hall way he will ignore you. Even if you're a friend of the court. Which I am.

~Ian Fusselman is by far the most intelligent and capable judge in Stanley Mosk as far as handling an unlawful detainer calendar goes. Always a pleasure to be in his courtroom.

I do not believe this judge to be professional or demonstrating a lack of prejudice to the extent that the standard of law demands. I think he should step down
