Judge Hoffman is easily one of the best judges in Southern California. He critically reads the briefs, and displays an excellent grasp of even very complex areas of the law. Although there are probably other judges (although not many) who are as smart as Judge Hofmann, what sets him apart is his patience and capacity to listen to and respect the attorneys in his courtroom. While other judges might disrespect counsel or even engage counsel personally, Judge Hofmann maintains the nobility and temperament of the ideal jurist - even when it is most difficult to do so.
