Civil Litigation - Private

The judge has a polite disposition but needs to retire. He ruled in a commercial unlawful detainer case that the statutory rules for eviction applied when the case law and lease provide that the commercial lease provisions applied to the eviction proceeding between the tenant and landlord before him. This fundamental and well settled case law that was cited in our trial brief was not even contested or contradicted by opposing counsel. The judge sat on the case for almost four weeks after a two hour hearing before making his ruling. He then punted the case out of his courtroom to the presiding judge for further proceedings and trial.

Criminal Defense Lawyer

Having spent his professional life as a lawyer, Bysshe knew exactly what kind of judge he wanted to be. Fair, competent, and someone who does not waste the time of others. He gave the parties enough time to present their cases but not a minute more than that. He had control of his courtroom.

As an extern, I observed Judge Bysshe in the courtroom for literally hundreds of hours. I also learned so very much from his private instruction. He is a compassionate/suffer no fools kind of judge. He is excellent at reading the credibility of witnesses and parties to the litigation. He kept his cool when it was necessary and tore into lawyers he felt were being less than professional. He followed up on many cases he no longer needed to be involved in. He cared.

Judge Bysshe cares as much about neighbor disputes as he does about gang injunctions. He has said that peace begins at home and if you can keep things from getting out of hand between neighbors, you can prevent much worse in the future. He is the most civic-minded and hardworking judge in the county. He admittedly truly loves the work and is honored by the opportunity to do this work. The county is lucky to have him.

Judge Bysshe tends to drift during trial and motion hearings. He seems bright enough but tends to lose focus.
