Investigate Judge Macaluso. Investigate DC Family Court Division.

Comment #: DC450
Judge Macaluso is an outstanding family court judge in the D.C. Superior Court.
She understands best practices in resolving intra-family cases, and will not hesitate to protect young, vulnerable children and their parents from harmful, adversarial methods of dispute resolution, and from violent, greed-driven, child-hating family lawyers. Judge Macaluso is a role model and leader in the D.C. courts.

She recently got overturned on a very simple and elementary issue in a landlord-tenant case regarding retaliation. The court of appeals decision even implied as much. You would think, based on her age and the way she carries herself, that she would be more intellectually curious but that isn't so. Her decision in the case was obviously made due to her unwillingness to give the tenant a fair shake. Glad that the tenant was represented by a large, prestigious law firm on a pro bono basis, as they really taught her a lesson.

very long winded. does not run a calendar efficiently. i agree that she tries to do the right thing when presented with a tough call but it would be easier if she just read the controlling case law and the briefs submitted by both sides. each case is different and she is often convinced that she should treat all of them the same. not a mean lady but not necessarily pleasant either. not one of the better ones.

Had a couple cases with Judge Macaluso. She seems to try to do the right thing, but she also was completely wrong on the law and was unfair to one side in her rulings. Neither case made it to trial as we settled rather than take chances with her. She is far from the worst judge in D.C. but I prefer to not appear in her courtroom.

It is better to be a civil litigation defendant before her than it is to be a plaintiff. This could be explained by the fact that her son is a defense lawyer for a car insurance company. She readily accepts the position of defendants with regard to discovery matters and defensive motions. If you are a plaintiff you will have an uphill battle. Hiking boots are recommended.

Comment #: DC227
If not listening to multitude of witnesses and making up her mind before the case begins constitutes a great judge- so be it! This woman has very little experience and an attorney and yet had a REPUBLICAN senate nominate her for this role. My research uncovered the fact that her only litigation experience noted was representing a truck driver on a $3,000 claim. She is horrible and has psychological issues. I think misogynist would be accurate. The other comments here are laughable. Women litigants, be warned, especially if you are attractive. I'm not kidding.

An outstanding judge in every respect. She possesses a unique combination of respect towards all parties and attorneys, a thorough knowledge of the law and an ability to see that justice is done.
