What others have said about Hon. Michael L. Gates

UNFIT to be a judge. He has crushed my opinion of the justice system. It is dangerous to have someone so incompetent making important decisions regarding the lives of others. Citizens need to read these reviews and vote him out.

Comment #: FL3643
He truly is unfit to make civil decisions BECAUSE he really doesn't care about justice or rights, he only wants the fastest and easiest path. If you are a pro se litigant you are done before you begin. Especially if the other side has lawyers. It doesn't matter if you present evidence and they don't...Pro se litigants will lose. He literally took the lawyers exact "dream outcome" order and put his name on it as the final judgement. He violated constitutional rights to free speech and civil proceedings, he granted the lawyers each and every motion no matter what or who was right, he just doesn't care about justice....if he doesn't like you, as a pro se litigant, and he won't.....you will lose even if you prove your case beyond a reasonable doubt. This man needs to look up the word justice and stop deciding cases based on the good ole lawyer network. He is not fit to decide matters that impact a persons life cause he just doesn't care

Civil Litigation - Private

Comment #: FL3581
Though he is outwardly courteous in the courtroom he is generally uninterested in the civil cases that come before him. He picks sides early on in the litigation. Has very little patience for self represented individuals.

Has even less interest in family law matters and can be vindictive if he thinks a party is not playing along.

When matters require a hearing where evidence must be taken, he has already made up his mind before the evidence is put into the record.

Has no empathy for foreclosure defendants even if they have meritorious defenses.

In criminal cases he can be harsh though that is unnecessary.

Sides with institutions and the state over the individual most of the time.

Rarely writes scholarly opinions, often avoiding any intelligent discussion. Relies too heavily on the attorneys to tell him how he should rule.

Too quick to hand out sanctions or rule off the cuff without thinking about the ramifications of a bad ruling.

Easily reversed on appeal most of the time because of his faults.

On the plus side, he is courteous and his demeanor in court reflects well on the record, but his rulings bite the dust.

Criminal Defense Lawyer

Comment #: FL2746
Knowingly sentenced an innocent defendant to 60 months in prison. Allowed police to manufacture evidence, and allowed state attorney to lose exculpatory evidence then move in limine to prevent discussion of the evidence lost by the state, and also lost by defense counsel at the urging of the state attorney. Here is a copy of a letter from habeas counsel concerning this case: http://db.tt/SAVlTgq6

Mike let the state attorney run his court through ex parte and clasndestine communications, all to the detriment of the innocent defendant.

Although Gates is a recipient of the silver Star, he is gutless in a courtroom and will not call down a corrupt prosecution when he observes it. He had expert testimony and visual proof that Hollywood Police "Did a Little Walt Disney on the video evidence," yet, when the state falsely represented that they lost the exculpatory evidence, that Gates had already ruled upon as tainted, granted the state's motion in limine to exclude all consideration of the evidence lost by the state and also lost by defense counsel at the urging of the state.

This man is unfit to sit in judgment of a free people.
