Rating:8.1
Comments:
Judge Barnes has taken a lot of heat over the past year for "bucking the system." He has truly tried to make positive changes while on the bench, much to the dismay of the old regime. He is willing to set low bonds where appropriate, actually LISTENS to attorneys and their clients, and tries to both punish and help criminal defendants, depending on the situtation. He has also been willing to openly criticize other elected public officials, when he believes they are wrong. Many say he is "easy" on the criminal defendants that appear before him. I disagree. I have seen him give some a huge break, when he thought they deserved it and usually after jumping through some pre-sentencing hoops. I have also seen him give defendants more jail time than I expected. Again, he listens and tries to do the right thing, not allowing "politics" to play a role. I wish there were a lot more judges like him out there!
