Very much fair and balanced. Clearly read the memoranda on complex multi-issue motions. Knowledgeable on the law. No apparent bias, and very even-handed in the courtroom and outside.

Its easy to see how he got on the bench: he's a very nice, affable fellow. I'd go deep sea fishing with him any day of the week.

Unfortunately, he is a lazy, mediocre at best but usually borderline awful judge. He shows up late. He takes long breaks and shows up late from them. He can be biased or make decisions for arbitrary reasons or based on personal prejudices, but he doesn't show his bias openly -- it comes out in his irrational decisions.

So, on the one hand, I don't mind being around Judge Nichols; but, if you have to bill a client for the time you stand there listening to his war story meanderings, it gets hard to justify after awhile. He isn't really a man of extremes so the end result probably isn't going to be way out in left field most of the time, but it won't be what I'd call justice, either.

Judge Nichols needs to read the memoranda submitted to him and rely less on his gut and instinct.
