I have known Judge Curran for several years, and I was a court clerk in a courtroom that he presided over. I've observed over time that he has a strong dislike of, and prejudice against, people of color. And I've heard rumors that when he was presiding over the criminal docket in Worcester, he had a reputation there as being biased against criminal defendants who happen to be black or Latino (he would find a justification to rule against the indigent's defense counsel -- CPCS counsel). It's sad that this kind of behavior from a sitting jurist (that used to be so common during the first half of the 20th Century) is still allowed to happen in Massachusetts.

It is difficult to believe that Judge Curran has elicted any favorable comments from members of the bar. In my opinion, he is simply the worst judge ever to sit on the bench in this Commonwealth. He lacks judicial temperament, intellect, is insecure and, overall, is a disgrace to the judiciary.

I served on a 4-day civil trial that involved a sad and difficult family case. Emotions ran high in the courtroom, but Judge Curran ensured that justice was served for all parties and that the jury was well prepared and continually informed about points of law. In the end we delivered a "sophisticated" verdict. He also expressed his appreciation to the jury for our personal time - personally thanking us. He treated us with the utmost respect and I would serve on his jury again.

It's not that anyone here "hates" Curran. The facts are the facts. He's an unfit Judge and needs to be removed from the Bench. It was a great feeling of relief for me when I asked him to recuse himself because of his most unethical behavior and he had no choice but to step down from my case.

TO ALL THAT ARE IN AGREEMENT JUDGE CURRAN NEEDS TO STEP DOWN - I have been contcated by several of you from BOTH sides of this problem.

I would like to suggest that we get together as a group and work as one to the goal of Judge Curran stepping down.

Many of us have filied formal complaints and we all have diffrent views and opionions, these need to be set aside.

I am suggesting that as one voice, simply encouraging those overseer's of Judge Curran and the Judge himself that the prudent course of action is obvious we have a better chance of Judge Curran moving on.

I would only be involved in a proffessional course of action, not a "lynch mob", however we may need to seek public venues to assist us, along with reaching out to our elected offcials, as one voice.

If interested email me at hgarshman@earthlink.net

Judge Curran ran the trial very well. We had a difficult civil case and at times we had questions for Judge Curran. He was able to explain things impartially and also clearly so that we could understand. Judge Curran clearly loves the law! I also found his staff very respectful of us all. It was apparent that they loved him and had a great relationship with him. It was a great experience!

I am an Hispanic attorney who has practiced for many years, typically in the district court but with significant superior court trial work. I have been in front of Judge Curran numerous times, although mainly in the district court. I never found him to act in what I thought was a bigoted or racial way towards anyone who came before him, including my clients. I did find him to be a "hard ass" judge with a definite bias towards the prosecution and he often was short tempered with everyone. But I would never accuse him of being a racist or a bigot. Unfortunately those words have been tossed around so casually these days by we minority attorneys to describe anyone we have a problem with that they have lost a lot of their meaning and impact. Its a shame given what those who came before us had to overcome to get us where we are today.

I agree with MA 211 whole-heartedly, in that, judge curran is the definition of a colored-man's nightmare. his honor will do all he can to ensure that the white person/lawyer wins the motion or ruling while the racial-minority loses in his courtroom.
very sad what damage a bigot like honorable dennis curran can do to innocent NonWhite people's lives & their future.
The sad fact is: there is nothing anyone can do due to his honor's position on the superior court bench. we just have to wait it out and hopefully, his honor will retire in the not too distant future.

judge curran is a vicious BULLY and does not know the meaning of "empathy" if you're a hispanic, black, or some other minority person. he will ignore estabilished law including, statutes, to dictate ill-treatment to minority litigants or (in the case of a criminal case) minority defendants. I use to place bets with another clerk about how an outcome on a motion before judge Curran would play out, if ONE of the parties was non-caucasian while the other was party was WHITE. Invariably, on pretty much most occasions, the judge find a way to put-down or intimidate the colored party and additionally would find some way to distinguish the facts (from a precedent that was clearly in the colored person's favor) and rule in the white party's favor. Many times, i felt sick to my stomach at the injustice being perpetrated by this judge, given that the other eighty or so superior court judges in Mass. are very respectable, fair, non-racist professionals who work long hours at their profession.

MA 213. You must think we are all idiots. It is clear from your posting that you are not a Superior Court clerk. You are the same guy who wrote 174, 188, 203 and 212. I was a Superior Court law clerk and have practiced in every civil session in this Commonwealth for over 25 years. I have gotten to know just about every civil session clerk and know them to be dedicated professionals who would never stoop as low as you like to think they would and make libelous comments about a sitting judge. You, and MA212 (if that is a separate person, which I don't believe) are also bigots for implying that the white litigants who appear in Judge Curran's courtroom are not similarly talented and capable of making presuasive argument. Every attorney I have come across in my years, black or white, male or female, with the possible exception of you, has been thoroughly professional and has earned my respect and I am sure Judge Curran, like every other judge on the bench, feels the same way. From discussions in the local legal community, I know of others who respect Judge Curran who have also posted on this site. I must add that we have also discussed you. I say "you" as we are all convinced that since you refuse to come out identify yourself, all these ravings, given their similarity of style and substance, must be the exertions of one individual; one solitary failed, desperate individual who, having been found so wanting in a courtroom, must now devote himself to bitter invective shot from behind, or in your case under, a rock.

I am a Superior Court Clerk in a civil session where I have seen Justice curran treat White Lawyers and pro Se folks very differently from Minority lawyers and Pro se litigants, even though the nonWhite litigants were very talented, came from elite law Schools, and made persuasive legal arguments with cogent supporting authorities.
I respect MA-203 Assistant clerk magistrate for having the courage to speak out and tell the truth about Curran's racist judicial behavior and his flagrant violations of Mass. "Code of Judicial Conduct." But Judge curran is well aware that it's virtually impossible to unseat him because-- when push comes to shove-- the members of the
Bench (no matter whether Conservative or Liberal jurists) will circle wagon and defend one of their own. Basically, the only hope is that some brave news reporter will become aware of curran's conduct, and will publish an article on the Boston globe or the boston Herald which will bring attention to this Justice's hateful behavior. Now THAT
might probably get the SJC or the legislature to hold hearings on justice curran.

As a practitioner who has appeared multiple times in Civil and criminal matters before Judge curran, I can state emphatically that he has an appropriate level of judicial temperament and the patience to review memos and briefs before hearings to be adequately prepared to get to heart of the issues in a professional manner. However, SADLY, this work behavior
is ONLY reserved for Caucasian attorneys and caucasian pro se litigants. I have observed with deep discomfort judge Curran embarrass, threaten with contempt, cajole, talk-down in a demeaning or condescending manner, ridicule many black and hispanic colleagues who-- in my professional judgment-- appeared to be making well thought-out and convincing arguments before the court. Having grown up in the old-south, and having relocated years ago to new England due to my wife's job, I can clearly see this double-standard for what it is: pure and vicious BIGOTRY and hatred by judge curran towards non-Caucasian colleagues and pro se parties.

As an assistant Clerk magistrate who has worked with Judge Dennis Curran years ago, I have personally observed him to be a Racial Bigot-- plain and simple. Sure, as a prior post noted "He will move cases forward in a fast manner and he refuses to let a second go to waste in HIS court room and he moves at a fast pace" IF you have the misfortune to be a Non-WHITE attorney or a female Lawyer or poor proSe litigant.
I ask you: How is that serving "Substantial justice"?
Also, I have personally seen-- on more than one occassion-- judge Curran, bully or Threaten to hold-in-contempt, Non-white lawyers and Prose litigants who only wanted to have their day in court and who had made intelligent, legally sound, persuasive arguments, but curran refused to give them the time of day "In His court room."
He WAS and IS a Tyrant and a racist BULLY.
He flagrantly violates Judicial standards of conduct and his oath to respect Procedural due Process. sadly, due to his status as a superior court Judge, he knows there is nothing the minority members of the Mass. Bar or the public can do.

I totally agree with MA201 because I was in the Jury with her. I would add that, as a man, I felt that Judge Curran was a Sexist and was more heavily in favor of the Male attorney, not because the male-Lawyer was smarter, but actually because it was obvious to everyone (including to us lay people) that the Lady-lawyer was brighter, she was very attractive, and she was no push-over (she FOUGHT for her client). Now THAT is the kind of attorney I want in my corner. Unfortunately, Judge Curran is I think 'Old School' and seems to think that pretty ladies couldn't possibly be smart and additionally make damn-good lawyers and have the audacity to have higher legal acumen and better legal arguments than he can.

I served on the Jury in a recent case before Judge Curran. I'm not sure if the comments made by the jury-members in the posts below are from the same case as the one I was in or from a different one. I thought the Judge was inept because at times, he seemed confused and unable to understand why an Attorney would stand up and object many times. It seems to many of us in the jury that he was getting angry with this particular Female Attorney because every time she stood up to object, he would not accept her complaint and thus the 2 attorneys would have to go near the Judge and huddle and talk for a while, I presume. It was very frustrating to us jurors because we had to walk out of the court room so many times and the trial was needlessly delayed because clearly, the Judge did not like or was biased against the female lawyer and her objections, and plus he seemed to not be bright at all. One other thing-- when Judge was giving us the instructions before sending us to deliberate, when several of us asked for clairfications, he seemed to get impatient when he couldn't answer or did not know the correct answer, and so he would scowl menacingly at more than one of the jurors and bark at him/her in a rude manner (as if to say "how can you be that stupid and have to ask me to explaint this to you". That's one of the things the Judge is getting paid to do!) in an attempt to hide his own ineptitude. I think that whoever created this "therobingroom.com" website has done the public an enormous service because now we-- the tax payers-- can see the type of judges WE are paying salaries and benefits for through our taxes.

What Planet did you land from??
I seriously doubt that you have appeared multiple times for years before Judge Curran! Or, as a prior person indicated, MA-169 (and many other posts falsely praising Judge Curran) is really posted by Judge Curran himself.
Over many years, I have watched Judge Curran heap his weight and power on many Black and Hispanic Lawyers unfairly and in a contemptous manner. He fawns over most Caucasian Attorneys (from the many, many times over the years that I've observed him in his Courtrooms) and gives them breaks (on deadlines, Motion issues) while refusing to give leeway to Minority members of the Bar.
And if a Minority Litigant questions his authority, he can easily fly into a Temper and threaten Contempt.

He does more than just familiarize himself with the cases on his docket, he plays an active role in their progression through the system. He is committed to moving cases forward in a fair and efficient manner. He refuses to let a second go to waste in the court room. He moves at a fast pace and is resolution-oriented. If more judges operated in this manner, there would be fewer delays and shorter waits for litigants.

Hey MA-161 - thanks for picking up on what I said. Curran is as sloppy in the law asd he is in his private life. And to all who object to my postings or this other lawyer's- too bad. It's time that Curran cleans up his act and it's time he is held accountable. YES, I agree with you MA-161, Curran is probably monitoring these postings and saying nice things about himself that no one believes except him. He is most definitely a bigot, etc. He hates the poor, etc. and doesn't care what harm he brings to their reputations.

The community was well served with Judge Curran on the bench.

I am here to vent my frustration at having to deal with a LAZY, frequently-unprepared Judge Curran who has a history of cutting corners rather than spending at least a decent amount of time over legitimate issues.
It makes sense that Attorneys and others who have had the MISFORTUNE to appear before Judge Curran would choose this forum to speak the TRUTH about this DISGRACEFUL Jurist.
But why would professionals-- such as myself and others who’ve written below-- take time from their supposedly extremely busy schedule to heap false praise on this "Jurist"?
Let’s face it, we’re Lawyers, not Humanitarian workers! We’re practicing law to make lots of Money to pay-off large law school student-loans and opportunity to spend “dough” to move among affluent and connected circles. Point being, all that requires globs of $$$.
My guess is: some of these Attorneys might be posting on this forum with the knowledge, urging, and approval of Judge Curran (i.e. Licking Judge Curran's Ass to gain Favor in his Courtroom).
But a higher possibility is that it's actually Judge Curran who is monitoring these postings by Attorneys (the ones who’re unafraid to speak the TRUTH about Curran's LOW-INTELLECT and him being UNFIT for the Superior Court Bench).

I have been a member of the criminal defense bar for 30 years and had been in front of Judge Curran many times when he sat on the bench at Dorchester District Court. Although as the last commentator noted, he could be curt and short tempered, I never found him in any way to be capricious or biased towards anyone who came before him, attorney or defendant. Furthermore, to call him racist or bigoted is baseless and way beyond the pale and a malicious and cowardly accusation from two attorneys who don't have the courage to step forward and identify themselves but prefer to hide behind the anonymity of the internet.

Through my observations, Judge Curran is a respected member of the court among colleagues as well as attorneys. He takes his work seriously and gives due time to everything that comes across his desk, and thoughtfully applies the relevant law.

His advocacy to reduce the Massachusetts dockett overload as well as his other pursuits are exemplary of his strong work ethic and desire to improve the state judicial system.

Yes, he is curt, but I believe that is what a judge should be. A court room is a serious place with serious consequences, he simply recognizes that and applies it to how he runs a trial.

The first thing you notice when you step into Judge Curran's courtroom is that it is not run like every other courtroom. Understand this: Judge Curran is not one to overlook the fact that the Commonwealth's dockets are overburdened. On the civil side, Judge Curran will push hard to get the parties to come to a realistic and fair settlement. He recognizes that litigation is a costly, time-consuming procedure that may not get either party what they truly desire. Further still, he's not one to engage in the gamesmanship some trial lawyers play. As a former trial lawyer, he can see through it easily.

When you argue before Judge Curran, know that he has reviewed your briefs and that he understands the case. He is intelligent, but he is not one to engage in purely academic discussions. He is concerned with practicality; cutting straight to the real issues in the case will serve you well if you go before him. That said, Judge Curran will give both parties their fair say in the courtroom. He does listen, and if you shine some light on the real issues in your case, he will acknowledge that favorably.

The one thing that stand out the most about Judge Curran's courtroom, however, is that he is not afraid to seek alternative forms of resolution: be it mediation, extended settlement discussions, or otherwise.

I consider it a privilege to work among you all. Ever since I moved to Boston in 1998 to attend Harvard Law, I have been blessed to meet many wonderful and extremely talented Attorneys, Law Professors, and Justices in this great State.
Unfortunately though, I do have to agree with what many Minority Colleagues seem to be saying, in this forum, about Judge Dennis Curran's Judicial Temperament, His Racial Bias, and His LOW Intellect.
I do concede that Judge Curran would've been a great fit in a jurisdiction such as Wyoming, Nebraska, etc., where there are virtually no Racial-Minority members of the Bar.
As a Proud Latina Attorney (and first female in my family to go to College and Law School) I have observed and have been very concerned by Judge Curran's Vicious & Mean behavior towards Racial-Minority Attorneys and Pro Se Litigants.

Judge Curran may have his faults, as we all do, and he may have an occasional bad day, again as we all do, but overall, I have found him to be a hardworking, sincere, industrious judge, who takes his responsibilities seriously. He seems to understand the demands of trial work and the pressure and stress that is part and parcel of being a busy trial attorney like myself, who has tried, not just litigated, well over 100 cases in 28 years. I have never appeared before him with any trepidation.
Although I am a "caucasian" attorney, I too have worked exceedingly hard to get where I am. As attorneys today, we all do, regardless of race or gender. This is not an "easy" way to make a living for anyone. If I had a dollar for every time a judge has yelled at me or seemed to be rude towards me in 28 years, I could have retired from this gig a long time ago.

Unlike the many Caucasian Attorneys who had it easy in the system that we have in this country, as an African-American man and Attorney I had to struggle exeedingly hard to get where I am.
When I did first appear before Judge Curran, I could immediately sense that he resented me (for no reason other than my Race) and was rude to me on many, many occassions.
Judge Curran is a Racist and many of my colleagues (many of whom are Caucasian) have confided in me that they think Judge Curran is a Moron and many of us wonder how he managed to get into Law School. No doubt, he had good connections, and that's why this Disgraceful Jurist is still on the Bench.

Judge Dennis J. Curran is a pleasure to appear in front of if you are prepared to address the issues related to your appearance in court and completely know every aspect of your case.If you are not prepared and/or do not have a complete understanding of every aspect of the case, your deficiencies will become apparent during the hearing. Judge Curran comes to the bench fully prepared as he reads the file prior to any court hearing. He then saves everyone involved time as he gets right to the issues of concern. Judge Curran always attempts to move cases along at each juncture and does not allow cases to remain inactive. Judge Curran issues litigation control conference orders calling for all counsel to appear for inactive cases to get them moving again. Judge Curran attempts to utilize other resources in the trial court system such as mediation services. He facilitates the use of mediation by issuing orders which he prepares specifically for each case and which require counsel to confirm mediation has been promptly scheduled.
Judge Curran has always had a complete understanding of applicable law each time I have appeared in front of him.
When Judge Curran arrived at Worcester Superior Court for the January 1 to June 30,2011 civil session (a session that was without a judge for much of the prior 6 months),I had 15 civil cases in the session. All 15 were resolved during that session in large part due to Judge Curran's efforts to move cases along by calling for all counsel to appear and take the necessary measures for each case. Many resolved at mediation after Judge Curran issued Orders for Mediation at Litigation Control Conferences.
Judge Curran is a dedicated and hard working judge.

You ought to be ashamed of yourself. It is one thing to comment on a judge's professional conduct, which is fair game, but to cast stones at his personal life and family problems is unprofessional and ignorant, and a disservice to our oft maligned profession. None of us on the outside have any idea of what if anything led to his son's problems. I have only practiced for 28 years so I'm obviously not as wise as you but having represented people and families in trouble for most of my career, I do know that events can overtake a family that are often out of the parents' control. You should know that too. I will end this there without lowering myself to making an unwarranted ad hominem attack against someone I don't know, as seems to be your wont. It's as if: when a typical/average even-tempered, fair, impartial judge, when given facts "A" and "B" might probably come to either conclusions "C," "D," or "E," Judge Curran will however come to a conclusion off the charts (such as "Beta" or "Gamma").

It's like he's in his own world, and litigants who, out of bad luck, are assigned to appear before him (due to maybe bad karma) are forced to suffer through his rude, arrogrant, unfair, quick-tempered behavior.
