Judge Moffett actually applies the law and doesn't buy into the gender-based 'guilty by accusation' cult here in MoCo. Moffett recognizes that our overall judiciary is manufacturing an epidemic of gold-digging-whores by rewarding bad behavior and baseless claims. Moffett sees through the smokescreen. Excellent Judge!! PS: The poor ratings about Moffett on here are clearly the gold-digging-whores I referenced above.

The Associate Judge John Christian Moffett, specialized in family affairs, is just a joke! Former attorney, not only does he deny protective order to a victim of domestic violence and his three toddlers, but besides recommend to instead take an attorney. A judge trying to give business to former colleagues, such an ethical behavior! Associate Judge Moffett then declared to the victim that he could give a protective order only after the victim be physically hurt. What is protective with this logic? And there is more: Associate Judge Moffett then sent by mail copy of the denied petition to the spouse...perhaps in the hope that domestic violence goes wild faster? Shame on the MD judiciary system that does not protect its citizens, with the complicity (or leadership?) of Associate Judge Moffett!

Arrogant, does not take the time to read and understand cases. Has put my children and I at risk instead of protecting us. A shame for the US justice system.

Judge Moffett was extremely fair and even handed. Carefully reviewed the statute in a peace order matter involving neighbors, and displayed a lot of common sense in addition to detailed analysis of the law.

The judge seemed to be engaged in the assault case against my spouse, but then made an inexplicable acquittal ruling despite my spouse's testimony being completely inconsistent and making no logical sense. This judge also seemed to even chide me for choosing to testify against the person who assaulted me. Shameful.

People should write to the Commission for Judicial Disabilities to report this judge for his ignorance about child sex abuse and for being contemptuous to a child in his court.

He was ethically compromised as an attorney and he is an idiot on the bench. A complete joke.

Moco Judge John Moffett called child molestation charges, "if it happened", a "crime of opportunity" before releasing the accused molester on $0 bond.

His attitude is really disturbing. In no way is forcing an 8 year old child to perform fellatio a "crime of opportunity".

We need to get judges like this off the bench.

From reading the other comments, the judge has a history of being disrespectful to women and victims. Maryland is one of the states with the least judicial accountability and the longest terms for judges --15 years for circuit court judges, 10 years for district. In 2017, out of 234 complaints from the public, attorneys, and other judges to the Commission for Judicial Disabilities, only 3 judges were charged.

I think our legislators really need to consider making complaints about judges public and start evaluating judges' performances. There have been too many cases of judges abusing judicial discretion, not applying the law, exhibiting extreme bias, and being belittling and arogant to litgants, especially women and minorities.

The child victim had nothing to gain from coming forward except to tell the truth and prevent other children from falling prey. The reason she wasn't believed by Judge Moffet is because our judges are being trained by an organization called the AFCC to equivocate on abuse. The AFCC recently held training seminars in each state circuit titled "Unbelievable Stories: Children's Experience of Coercive Control". The inference is children are not believable, when studies show children rarely lie about abuse. The seminars are presented by unethical psychologists whose practices depart from APA guidelines and result in the prolonging of conflict. $$$ It makes no sense why this controversial, international organization has so much undue influence over our courts. Unfortunately, this is the result. Our legislators need to look into who and how our judges, police, school counselors, custody evaluators and social workers are being trained.

I feel really bad for this girl and her family. It took a lot of courage for her to come forward, only to be treated so horribly because our judges have been misled to not believe victims.

I hope this judge wakes up and starts to look at research from credible sources about child sex abuse and other child abuse.

How could you let a child rapist loose to do more damage without ANY repercussions? The man had absolutely nothing done to him, and he is now free. Again, how can you live with yourself?
You are a disgrace.

We had a civil trail for a peace order. The defendant hired an attorney which we were unaware of until we arrived in court. The cases before us were short (10 minutes) with no lawyers. As this was my first time in court, I would have appreciated if Judge Moffett would have explained to us the process given the defendant had an attorney. Judge Moffett ultimately granted our peace order, but he was very rude, spoke to us in a demeaning & scolding manner even though we were the victims. My husband is thinking of filing a complaint as Judge Moffett's tone & remarks to me were very patronizing and misogynistic. He did not speak to my husband the same way he spoke to me. It was definitely a traumatizing event because of Judge Moffett's behavior.
Then after case was over and we were waiting for the print out of the final peace order, he was joking with the defense lawyer - very disturbing to witness - good ol' boy network in action.

Judge Moffett, ruled in favor of the plaintiff for a breach of lease case when clearly filed improperly, not containing a 30 day notice of breach in the file and allowing res judicata to occur, knowing well it did, because he presided over both cases. Help me please!

I hope Judge Moffett treats other women in domestic violence cases better than he did me. He chose to rule on technicality rather than any understanding of the case. I feel totally unseen and disregarded. I've been to this court so many times dealing with this defendant and every single other judge understood my position. Judge Moffett was very cavalier and ruled in favor of an abuser, rather than take into account what it's like to live in fear of one.

Very ill-tempered and did not seem impartial at all. I had heard that he had a reputation for showboating in his court and he certainly lived up to that reputation. Jovial, laughing, joking around with the defense and state lawyers. When my case was brought up, the Judge seemed to have far too much knowledge about the parties involved considering how many people and cases were seen that day. Even my lawyer said something wasn't right and had a word with the Judge at the bench. In my opinion he is smug, unethical and unprofessional. His ruling also defied logic and he completely ignored both my counsel and the opposing counsel. This is one judge the state should not reappoint. IMHO.

I see that previous raters have focused on his demeanor and polite nature. I agree with them, but that is not the important issue with him. I have tried two cases before him and have found that he sets the bar impossibly high for plaintiffs to carry their burden of proof. It is if he was a defense attorney who always had a defense against plaintiff's claims. Particularly in District Court where the maximum value of claims is $30K, plaintiffs shouldn't have to spend thousands on having every expert possible testify and call the numerous witnesses that it appears he would require to find a plaintiff has met his burden of proof. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed this.

Having appeared before Judge Moffett as a self represented litigant in a speed camera case, unfortunately I must disagree with most of the positive opinions posted about Judge Moffett on this site.

I was driving a car registered to my mother and wanted a speed camera citation transferred to me which Maryland judges do frequently. Judge Moffett said he would transfer the citation but that I needed to appear another time to stand trial on the citation.

In preparation for trial I had diligently researched the Maryland speed camera statute and through a Public Information Act request obtained a copy of Montgomery County's contract with the company that operates the speed camera program. The contract shows that Montgomery County is paying a contract operator per citation in violation of the statute. To find this out required much diligent research. When I explained to Moffett that: 1) I did substantial legal and factual research to present my case, 2) Was about to take a job on the Eastern shore (it later fell through), and 3) Would like him to please hear my case that day as had judges in the past who had transferred speed cam citations from my mother to me for the car registered to my mother; Moffett threatened to charge me criminally with unlicensed practice of law for as a non-lawyer trying to represent my mother in his court. He then, without transferring the citation declared my mother failure to appear.

On explaining this to several lawyer contacts of mine, I was informed that Moffett plays guitar in a band, considers himself an entertainer and likes to make jokes from the bench; as I did observe in the cases of the litigants appearing prior to me. Those lawyer contacts told me that while they could not be certain they suspect the judge was just joking.

Judge Moffett should be informed that when he speaks from the bench to a non-lawyer with whom he is not familiar he represents the office of Judge and needs to conduct himself appropriately.

I had a case before this judge and he has some of the best demeanor I have ever seen. He was very down to earth and approachable and easy to talk to. Even though he did not decide the case completely in my favor I thought he was fair and neutral. There was only one issue I had where he ruled on an uncontested issue. Overall, would love to try more cases in front of this judge.
