Judge Merchan displayed extraordinary equanimity and patience during a badly organized defense with attorneys and the D.A. constantly "approaching" him. His concern about the Jury's time and scheduling was also exemplary.

I tried a case in front of him and got an acquittal. He tends to favor the prosecution, and his rulings will reflect that. If he dislikes you, and you tick him off, he explodes -- unfortunately he may do it in front of the jury. Earnestly tries to understand the law.

Tried a case in front of him. Smart guy, reasonably even tempered and fair, though occasionally a bit short and grouchy. But far and away more professional and judicious than most and he was a godsend after coming from another judge who was clueless. Lets you try your case. One eccentricity -- has this bizarre thing where he won't give you your own copy of his jury instructions -- you get about 15 minutes to huddle over one copy of the jury charge with the prosecutor and then make your objections -- like it's some proprietary document. But that was a small price to pay for having a real judge.
