I have a psychiatric patient who was brought in by his mother and readmitted today to our psychiatric unit at Syosset for worsening psychosis and aggression towards his family. He also required restraints in our emergency room because of his aggression towards hospital staff. He has a past psychiatric history of psychosis, with four prior psychiatric hospitalizations within a year. Despite all this, when his doctors went to court for an order for treatment over objection, he was discharged on court order by Judge Shulman from Zucker Hillside Hospital on 1/14/2020, with no outpatient treatment. Patient was at great risk for harming his family and himself. Psychiatrist do not go to court for treatment over objection unless the patient is at great risk for harm if not treated with medications. Psychiatric medications, especially the antipsychotics, greatly improve people's lives and enable them to become productive members of society. Judge Shulman does not seem to have a good understanding about the need for mandated treatment for people who are too psychotic or paranoid and unable to consent for treatment themselves.

My experience was pleasant and quick. People either think he pushes too hard for jury or doesn’t push hard enough. He just can’t win. Court isn’t fun period. Schulman is straight as an arrow. Just be ready for trial and you won’t be surprised. He doesn’t go for the usual delays

Come prepared and you will have a good experience. I have put in extra time before his cases and it has always paid off. He is no fool and doesn't go for standard tactics that he has heard all too long. Actually gives me a chance to make use of my schooling for a change.

While I am generally reluctant to speak ill of others, particularly other members of the bar and bench, I must make an exception in the case of Judge Martin Schulman, a singularly offensive individual. Time and Judge Schulman shows himself horribly incapable of rational thought as he mishandles the TSP calendar in Queens County. On one level, I believe he probably should be pitied since, based upon his speech patterns, he seems to have been a stroke victim. If so, this might also explain his irascible and abusive behavior toward perfectly civil lawyers coming before him. Most often, like a demented wind-up doll, he reflexively blurts out "Go pick a jury" as if that is the solution to all the matters that come before him. We can only hope that Judge Schulman's "term" expires soon.

The judge demanded to know what basis there was for the claims of a pro se (who happens to be a lawyer tho you'd never know it). The plaintiff stammered (because there isn't one) and the judge kicked the case.

I'm glad that someone finally asked what basis there was for the case, but as others have observed his temperament is awful and he tends to fly by the seat of his pants.

Religion does not belong in a courtroom and while he is tooted for being a cantor, he should not be a Judge. Schulman is biased and does not have a proper judicial temperament. He represents all that is wrong with the judiciary in Queens. He does not have any love for truth and justice and he has shown preferential treatment to certain lawyers to the detriment of others. Any positive review of him must be from one of his chosen who benefited from his bias.

Having had numerous cases with Judge Schulman over the years, I can say that he is one of the best trial judges before whom I have ever tried a case. He is thoughtful, deliberate and truly cares. And he has a marvelous and sincere judicial temperament.

His performance in court is excellent. He actively cites case law, standing, and precedent. I have appeared in his court two times, due to NYCHHC holding me hostage for the $1,500 per night insurance money when I was totally and completely lucid. Additionally, after being summarily discharged from his court on December 26, 2013, the Corporation's Hospital staff tried to involve me in a kickback scheme by trying to send me to a homeless shelter on Brooklyn's Pitkin Avenue.

Unfortunately, Judge Schulman epitomizes all that is wrong with the Queens Supreme Court. Incompetent imbeciles are on the bench there, with no regard for the rule of law, and no respect for litigants or lawyers. Abandon hope, all ye who enter there.

Will not grant adjournments even on consent, even for a reasonable time, even if you are nowhere near standards and goals. Will however, helpfully offer to dismiss your case.

Simply, he is the worst TAP judge in the City of N.Y. All of the other comments are 100% accurate. He does not even attempt to settle a case. He obtains preliminary information about the case and then says "Go pick a jury" which is his solution to every request. If you want an adjournment on the 2nd or 3rd appearance you are in jeopardy, depending on his mood, that he will dismiss (plaintiff) or put you in default (defendant) if you do not pick a jury despite the fact that the action is far from the standards and goals. Three years ago, I requested an short adjournment on the 2nd appearance because my client's, who lives in Florida, mother died the night before. Also, the standard and goals date was six months away. To make a long story short, he dismissed my case. My situation is not an isolated incident and over the years I have heard worse stories. Otherwise, everyone else in that part from the clerks to the court officers are a real pleasure.

Has no desire to work but to push matters out and get rid of them no matter the circumstances.

The side with the money wins in this judge's courtroom. I believe him to be personally honest, but he has no empathy at all for poor people or inarticulate people. Pro se litigants in his courtroo might as well just give up and go home, because he virtually always sides with the lawyer over the unpresented party. Also, he is not killing himself with work. Motions take forever when he gets them, and he never gets to the courtroom before 10:15.

Judge Cardoza would be rolling over in his grave if he knew this is what the Judiciary in NY has degraded to. He does nothing other than sit in the trial assignment part and blames lawyers for cases being past standards and goals because of his own ineptitude.

Judge Schulman lacks judicial temperament, imagination, patience, insight and a willingness to attempt to resolve real problems. He can be irascible, and his one-size-fits-all solution is "pick a jury." His only saving grace is his wonderful Law Secretary who should be the one wearing the black robe.

Judge Schulman knows how to do one thing, and one thing only, and that is to direct the attorneys to select a jury. He has a very poor attitude toward the attorneys who appear before him. Very unimpressive. He makes no effort to discuss the law, or the facts of a case, and does not grant adjournments. It is impossible to say whether he knows any law or not, since the law does not ever come into consideration in his part.
