Appeared many times before him; won some, lost some. Doesn't matter; he does not meet the criteria of what a judge should be. Thinks he's way smarter than he is although he does possess some legal acumen (took him up twice and won twice); reaches conclusions about a matter well before all the issues are fully briefed, with no regard for attorneys, treating everyone with the same disdain including taking phone calls on the bench in the middle of a trial and discussing, presumably with his wife, where they are going to eat that evening--no manners. Loves to engage in questioning your witness and then explaining to the jury, erroneously, what the testimony proves when in truth he's dead wrong. And loves to show how smart he is by conducting two trials at the same time, shuttling in juries and inconveniencing witnesses. I actually had great success in an arbitration that I don't think I could have won at trial before any judge because several of the other parties were scared-off by his ridiculous discovery schedule impositions in a complex securities case. Became very insulted when, having been appointed a JHO, I not only refused to have him try my matter but I told him I would never make that choice unless I was tortured into it.

Very hot-headed and undisciplined. Inclined to think he has mastered everything about a case in the first 60 seconds. After that, just hope you are the one he favors.

Awful and seems to be losing his grip. Apparently volunteering as a JHO, but should not be permitted in the court system, IMO. Get any decision on an appealable paper.

It should be J.O. Gammerman. After retiring as one of the most arrogant, opinionated, although probably hard working judges in the history the of NYS Supreme Court, tried his hand as a mediator. But nobody wanted him, justifiably, because of his horrid reputation. Is now back in the system haunting only the most masochistic attorneys who agree to use him as an adjudicator.

Irascible, and disrespectful to counsel.Has the audacity to field calls from his wife while in the middle of a motion or trial. Also interferes with the examination of a witness by counsel and then directs to the jury his opinion of what the witness has testified to while interfering with counsel's curative attempts.

He's a disaster. Don't know how he ever got appointed or elected?

JHO Ira Gamerman is the worst! I asked for an adjournment of a trial because my client was out of state. I had called his part and his staff said because it was the first time on, it would be granted.
JHO Gammerman denied it and said if my client was not in court the next day, he would dismiss my case.

My client had to buy an emergency flight at substantial expense. After doing so, his clerk called me the next day and said that JHO Gammerman had to go to some conference and that the case was adjourned for a couple of weeks.

That was very inconsiderate to say the least.

I heard he retired and is working at some ADR place. I would never use him for ADR or anything. His retirment from the bench benefits all lawyers, litigants, and society in general.

Belongs in the 60 Centre Street Hall of Fame. He's not the best judge but definitely one of the best personalities to grace the courthouse.

He is a very smart man. Many times he uses his fierce intelligence to cut through nonsense and arrive at good decisions. His judicial temperment is horrid. He is nasty and unaccomodating. He makes rude comments about attorneys in front of clients. He is a smart man, bad judge.

Justice Gammerman is one of the best judges I have encountered. He is right on the money on legal issues, cuts through the BS, and usually comes up with a better decision than the appellate division.

His years of experience result in his instantly sizing up a case. He is quick and will appropriately urge settlement to both parties. A good smart judge who will not impose drastic remedies absent more than just cause.

This guy should retire now! Why OCS hasn't shown him the door, is beyond me. He must know where all the bodies are buried.

Snap decisions based on initial impressions and then unwilling to change his mind regardless of the facts.
Doesn't care about parties' needs when scheduling - completely unreasonable.

You get a decision very promptly and he is right very often. He does the job and takes it seriously. Even when he is wrong, you get a chance to appeal before the case has died from old age.

One of the best commercial judges. He will do his own research on a motion for summary judgment, and correctly resolve issues not raised by the parties. Somewhat slow in deciding, but the results are worth it.

Comments:
Judge Gammerman is a terrific trial judge, who hears, understands and remembers virtually everything. He will interject his own questions from time to time, but they are generally on the money, and he does not, in my experience "take over" from trial counsel, although I have heard the contrary. However, he can take forever to decide post-trial motions or render his decisions in bench trials. At the pretrial stage, he is prone to snap judgments from the bench. However extensively briefed, motions are generally decided based on counsel's oral presentations at the bench. When he gives a more considered decision, it is generally read into the record in the courtroom, without much if any treatment of legal precedent. Yet, based on his many years of experience, he makes the right decision most of the time and moves the case along quickly.

Exceptional judge. And his high opinion of himself is actually deserved.
