Takes too long to make decisions

Comments:
I had a very complex argument before Justice Sherwood. He was very, very prepared. He cited cases that the lawyers had not found. He was very, very patient at oral argument. He gave counsel time to think and to find material in the record.

Comments:
Seems to look for basic fairness in the case. Interacts well with lawyers, asks sharp questions. Not particularly hard-working.

Simply awful. Full of himself (for reasons unclear), not interested in law, lousy temperment.

Comments:
He is a terrible judge. Not particularly intelligent or ability to decide who is on the right side of the litigation. He does not make smart decisions . Seems calm and pleasant, but a really bad judge from the judicial aspect.

Very much in the hands of a few lawyers and caters to them. Some lawyers always seem to get him as a judge. Would not be surprised, to say the least, if it was more than that.

Comments:
On day for which argument was scheduled, called counsel up for a side bar and advised that the "motions are thick" so we should go settle the case. Clear message was that he didn't want to read the briefs and would just deny everything so we should resolve it ourselves. Not sure why he is on bench.

Comments:
Hands down -- the best judge on the NY Supreme Civil Bench. The only problem I've noticed with him is that he has a new law clerk who lacks the legal gravitas and acumen that has been the hallmark of Justice Sherwood's career.

Comments:
This judge is both rude and condescending.

Comments:
As best I can tell, Judge Sherwood was never a trial lawyer (i.e., his practical experience prior to taking the bench was limited to appellate work, primarily in the public sector). This shows, particularly relative to the odd way he handles discovery issues. I do not think that he is a good judge (I will add that he mixed up the parties several times in the case).

Comments:
Judge Sherwood is the best jurist on the NY state Supreme Court bench. I don't know who posted the comments below, but they're not even close. My firm has five litigations before him currently -- one representing a defendant, four representing the plaintiff. Judge Sherwood is always prepared, reads the papers in advance, and knows the case law pertaining to the cases. My instinct is that the lawyers who commented below tried to B.S. Judge Sherwood. He has no patience for that.

Comments:
Avoid this judge by any means necessary. He does not read the papers, does not write his opinions, appears to have little grasp on trial practice, and is abusive to counsel.

Civil Litigation - Private

Comment #: NY4584
Rating:1.1
Comments:
Judge Sherwood seems to use an awful judicial temperament to mask the fact that he is unprepared for the arguments on his calendar. He is also extremely slow to address discovery issues raised by counsel, irrespective of whether the same are material. Overall, probably one of the worst pulls in the Commercial Division.

Civil Litigation - Private

Comment #: NY4530
Rating:2.9
Comments:
Does not exert proper control over cases; tries to skirt tough issues; is more interested in appearing smart than actually being smart. Has a bad temperament as well as a general inability to acknowledge factual or legal points that, although accurate, undermine the bench brief prepared by the law clerks.
