I have to disagree with the comments below. I went before him, and he was nice and patient, and he has a sense of humor. He tries to work it our for the tenant to avoid eviction. He is not gruff at all, I found him to be very fair.

He complains constantly [Redacted by Ed. ] to try to force tenants to settle. His doesn't listen. Finkelstein's deference to the landlord's attorney is so solicitous [Redacted by Ed. ] . Frankly it is embarrassing and disheartening to observe him. He is a bully and seems ignorant and/or disinterested in any legal complexity. Childish and temperamental, it appears he reaches a decision early on regardless of the facts. He is a judge that likes to remind his courtroom that he can do whatever he wants, and has the maturity of a toddler in full meltdown. Finkelstein does little to engender respect for the judiciary or the law. I pity any tenant who appears before him. I am a law student and a group of us draw lots to determine who will attend his hearings. The loser has to attend. Watching Finkelstein on the bench is an education in and of itself and sets the bar pretty low for judiciary behavior and thoughtful decisions. [Redacted by Ed. ] . Don't understand why he bothers with the job, the pay must be pretty good.

He has temper management problems and about half as smart as he thinks he is. He is one of the most intellectually lazy individuals I've ever met. A real embarrassment to NY. When in his part I suggest you try to get sent to a trial judge, you don't want his fingerprints on your case. His wife Judge Milin is much kinder but has limited intellectual capacity. It's a shame that either are on the bench.

Very gruff. Seems bored with his job. Often treats pro se tenants with derision, even though I don't think he's aware of it.
