Civil Litigation - Private

This guy plays to whoever is in power. He has no spine. Gives a fake rap about the military - like he's a great patriot. Ganged up on the defendant in a highly publicized case. Came out looking like a hero. Truth was he sided with the media view of the case, as well as his then chief administrative judge (later forced to retire due to unethical collusion with the boro DA [and a defense lawyer whom held a lot of sway with the boro DA]. Don't know if the fires in hell could ever be made hot enough for this scoundrel.

Ingram recently replaced Diana Johnson as Surrogate. He clearly has done his homework and is fully up to speed with the somewhat arcane and archaic rules of the Surrogate's Court. He is pleasant and respectful to counsel and parties. A real gentleman on the bench.

Just came back from his sentencing my client. There were no surprises. He called us up to the bench in advance to confirm the terms of the agreed-upon sentence. After a favorable PSR, he imposed the agreed-upon sentence. He's decent, polite, smart and evenhanded.

Seems to run a tight ship. I just had a pretrial appearance before him and held a tight rein on a lawyer who was giving him double-talk.

I had an arraignment before him in a multiple defendant Medicaid Fraud case and he acted professionally in seeing that each defendant was speedily arraigned and released that day. Although the A.G.'s office did a less than mediocre bail presentation for a few defendants considered flight risks, the judge considered the defense (also less than mediocre) arguments and released the defendant for 24 hours to post bail the next day. If I had known he was amendable to giving defendants time to post, I wouldn't have had the clients run around getting funds at the last minute. I hope my pretrial and trial experience before this judge is as pleasurable as the arraignment. So, for the next attorney at an arraignment on disputed bail, I'd take a shot before Judge Ingram at arguing for a reduced bail, rather than accept the number the People propose.
