She’s no one’s fool, for sure. Aggressive but common sense oriented. Good judge.

As other comments on here have indicated, Judge Manzanet does not come across as an impartial judge. Like others have suggest, it's obvious that she is pro-plaintiff. Another associate at my firm had an oral argument before the First Dep't, so I watched Judge Manzanet question the attorneys in about 7-8 other cases (my colleague's case was in the middle of the calendar). She does not know how to ask a question without yelling and being condescending, and whenever she did ask a question, it was to embarrass the attorneys or make them look like their positions were ridiculous. It's a sad state of affairs when a judge seemingly characterizes every argument she disagrees with as being stupid: there certainly are some frivolous arguments out there, but most arguments do have some merit. Judge Manzanet needs to recognize that, and she also needs to learn how to respect the attorneys that have worked so far to get their cases before the First Dep't.

Another thing that struck me was her lack of professionalism. At one point, she literally got up off the bench and left the courtroom in the middle of an argument (presumably to use the restroom). I'm sorry, but what?--how can she say she's listened to the arguments? I've never seen a judge do that before. Whatever her reason for leaving the courtroom--to use the restroom or perhaps another reason--should have been taken care of before, after, or in between oral arguments, but not in the middle of one. A judge should know better.

Last, I want to say that I've worked with judges (clerked with one, interned with three others) across both New York and Indiana. I liked the judges I clerked for/interned for, but, having been in many courtrooms, I've seen some bad judges. I can say, without any hesitation, that Judge Manzanet came across as the one of the worst judges I've seen.

Comments:
I found Justice Manzanet to be highly unprofessional, unnecessarily confrontational, dismissive, disrespectful to attorneys and totally lacking in judicial demeanor. I witnessed engage in this behavior throughout an entire afternoon of appellate arguments and left with an extremely poor opinion of her.

Even though she had very little experience she was elevated to the Appellate Bench. Shocking Proof of politics. And yes, she is "compassionate towards plaintiffs" but that really shouldn't be her role.

She has good instincts but her legal acumen is a bit lacking. She is compassionate toward plaintiffs and tries hard to resolve cases.
