He's really heavy handed, but I don't know if that's necessarily a bad thing. My experience is that he doesn't put up with much buffoonery. He doesn't smile or laugh. He is all business, and if you aren't all business as well, you'll wind up getting the business end of Van Grunsven's heavy hand. I think that, in the aggregate, that heavy hand sharpens the practice of the lawyers appearing before him. Come prepared to do your very best.

This judge is crabby. He is intimidating. He is unapproachable. He is a time bomb ticking. Moody and inconsistent. His reputation for anger is evident. I am saddened he stands for MKE justice civll court.

The man is a crabby, angry, ignorant judge who will disregard procedure, precedent, and undisputed facts in order to assure that he keeps his seat as a judge. If you are a party suing a high profile defendant or a defendant with a lot of economic resources and you catch Van Grunsven as a judge, I would strongly suggest you utilize your one motion for substitution and get another judge. The guy is a nightmare. He’s definitely smart, but he uses his intelligence to disregard the law to serve the interests of whatever may be personally or professionally expedient for himself. I hate to speak ill of any judge, and I hate speaking ill of Van Grunsven, but this poor review is well-deserved.

Judge Van Grunsven is a smart guy. He comes prepared. He makes good decisions. However, he confuses crabbiness for judicial temperament. He has not been on the bench long enough to hate his job as much as it appears. He treats everyone like they are abusing him.
